American automaker (1918–1932) — Hudson's lower-priced companion brand that popularized the affordable closed car and reached third in US sales by 1929 before becoming the Terraplane.

Four
The original Essex — an affordable four-cylinder car (from 1919) whose low-priced 1922 closed coach helped end the open-touring era.
Six
Essex's six-cylinder line from 1924 — the volume car that, badged 'Super Six,' lifted Essex to third in US sales by 1929.
Challenger
The 1930 Essex Challenger — a restyled six on a lower, stronger chassis with an enlarged engine, launched into a collapsing market.
Pacemaker
The final 1932 Essex — sold as the Pacemaker (Super-Six) just as the new lighter Terraplane arrived to replace the name entirely.
