History

Launched in 1974 to succeed the Beetle, the front-wheel-drive Golf reset Volkswagen's lineup for the modern era; in North America the first-generation car was sold as the 'Rabbit' (and the name returned briefly for the US Mk5 hatchback around 2006–2009).

The 1976 European GTI variant effectively created the 'hot hatch' segment, blending practicality with genuine performance, and the Golf has run across eight 'Mk' generations from the Mk1 to today's Mk8.

First generation (Mk1) · Mk1 / US 'Rabbit'

1975–1984

Second generation (Mk2) · Mk2

1985–1992

Third generation (Mk3) · Mk3

1993–1998

A rounder, safety-focused redesign that introduced the narrow-angle VR6 engine to the Golf. Sold in the US from 1993; the Mk4 arrived mid-1999, so MY1999 is assigned to the Mk4 here.
Fourth generation (Mk4) · Mk4

1999–2005

A major leap in interior quality and perceived premiumness that reset class expectations. Brought the all-wheel-drive VR6 R32 — the first Golf 'R' — to the US. US Golf Mk4 ran model years 1999–2005 before the Mk5 'Rabbit' arrived for 2006.
Fifth generation (Mk5) · Mk5 / US 'Rabbit' (revived)

2006–2009

Sixth generation (Mk6) · Mk6

2010–2014

Seventh generation (Mk7) · Mk7

2015–2021

Built on VW's MQB platform — lighter, more efficient, and widely praised as one of the best Golfs ever. The US Golf R returned with all-wheel drive. Eighth generation (Mk8) · Mk8

2022–present
