The Type 3 (1961–1973) slotted above the Beetle with a flatter air-cooled engine that freed up trunk space at both ends, sold in roomier Notchback, Fastback, and Squareback wagon bodies.
It reached the US in 1966, where the Squareback wagon and Fastback were the popular versions, and was an early adopter of electronic fuel injection. Source note: Wikipedia "Volkswagen Type 3" — VW of America marketed the Type 3 (Squareback/Fastback) from MY1966; the Notchback was never US-imported.
