2020Volkswagen Golf

Built on VW's MQB platform — lighter, more efficient, and widely praised as one of the best Golfs ever. The US Golf R returned with all-wheel drive. The standard US Golf hatchback was discontinued after 2021, leaving the GTI and R. // Source: Wikipedia "Volkswagen Golf Mk7" / VW media — US Mk7 MY2015–2021 (base Golf pulled after 2021).

The 2020 model year

Overview

Volkswagen simplified the U.S. Golf range for 2020 to one well-equipped Golf TSI trim while continuing the three-trim Golf GTI. The regular Golf used a 147-hp 1.4-liter turbo four with manual or eight-speed automatic choices; the 228-hp GTI retained manual and seven-speed DSG choices across S, SE, and Autobahn trims.

Year over year

What changed

  • The regular Golf was consolidated into a single Golf TSI trim.
  • KESSY keyless access, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, 16-inch alloy wheels, Car-Net, and subscription-based in-car Wi-Fi became standard on the Golf TSI.
  • Front Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Traffic Alert became standard throughout the GTI range.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The one-trim Golf TSI and three-trim GTI were the final phase of the U.S. Mk7 generation.
  • The GTI remained available as S, SE, and Autobahn with manual or DSG transmission choices.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Order 1.4-liter Golf TSI and 2.0-liter GTI engine, ignition, cooling, and filter parts by exact engine; the shared body does not make those applications interchangeable.
  • Confirm the six-speed manual, eight-speed conventional automatic, or seven-speed DSG before ordering transmission service parts or fluid.
