2021Volkswagen Golf

Built on VW's MQB platform — lighter, more efficient, and widely praised as one of the best Golfs ever. The US Golf R returned with all-wheel drive. The 2021 model year

Overview

The 2021 model year closed the U.S. Mk7 Golf generation. Volkswagen offered one Golf TSI trim and the Golf GTI in S, SE, and Autobahn trims; the regular car retained its 147-hp 1.4-liter turbo engine, while the GTI used a 228-hp 2.0-liter turbo engine.

Year over year

What changed

  • Volkswagen identified 2021 as the final model year of the seventh-generation U.S. Golf.
  • The one-trim Golf TSI made 16-inch wheels, leatherette seating, keyless access, heated seats, and a panoramic sunroof standard.
  • Every GTI gained gloss-black mirror caps and a rear lip spoiler; SE and Autobahn added MIB3 infotainment with navigation.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The base Golf's U.S. run ended with this model year; the Mk8 continued here only as GTI and Golf R.
  • Volkswagen documented one Golf TSI trim and three GTI trims for the final Mk7 year.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Keep the 1.4-liter Golf TSI and 2.0-liter GTI applications separate when buying engine, ignition, cooling, or filter parts.
  • The eight-speed Golf TSI automatic is not the GTI's seven-speed DSG; verify the transmission before ordering fluid, filters, or service kits.
