The 1988 model year

Overview

The final Fox-platform Thunderbird year retained four series: Thunderbird, LX, Sport, and Turbo Coupe. The regular and LX cars used the 3.8-liter V6 or optional 5.0-liter V8 with Automatic Overdrive, Sport used the 155-hp V8, and Turbo Coupe retained its 190-hp five-speed or 150-hp automatic turbo-four split.

Year over year

What changed

  • The four-series 1987 lineup carried into the final model year of the aerodynamic 1983 body.
  • Ford continued the transmission-dependent Turbo Coupe ratings rather than advertising one output for both versions.
  • The next Thunderbird would move to the all-new MN12 chassis.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The factory contents and feature matrix preserve Thunderbird and Sport as separate series alongside LX and Turbo Coupe.

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Verify the Turbo Coupe transmission before ordering boost, engine-management, or driveline parts.
  • Use the 5.0-liter archived schedule only for V8 cars; it does not cover the V6 or turbo four.
