The 1983 model year

Overview

Ford completely redesigned Thunderbird for 1983 around a low-drag aero body and three series: Thunderbird, luxury-oriented Heritage, and the new performance Turbo Coupe. Thunderbird and Heritage paired a standard 3.8-liter V6 with SelectShift or an optional 5.0-liter EFI V8 with Automatic Overdrive; Turbo Coupe used an exclusive turbocharged 2.3-liter four and five-speed manual.

Year over year

What changed

  • An all-new aerodynamic body replaced the upright 1980–1982 design.
  • Turbo Coupe debuted with Ford's turbocharged EFI 2.3-liter four, five-speed manual, special suspension, analog instruments, and Traction-Lok axle.
  • The regular Thunderbird and Heritage standardized the 3.8-liter V6 while offering the 5.0-liter EFI V8 with Automatic Overdrive.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The factory feature matrix treats Thunderbird, Heritage, and Turbo Coupe as three series and marks the Turbo powertrain unavailable on the other two.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Use the brochure's 5,000-mile Turbo Coupe oil interval versus 7,500 miles for V6/V8 cars.
  • Replace plugs and the engine air filter at 30,000 miles; coolant is 30,000 miles/three years for the 3.8 V6 but 52,500 miles/three years for Turbo Coupe and 5.0 V8.
  • Verify series, engine, and transmission before ordering parts; the 1983 Turbo Coupe is five-speed-only.
