The 1982 model year
Overview
The final year of the 1980–1982 body offered three named series: Thunderbird, Town Landau, and Heritage. A 3.3-liter inline-six remained standard on the first two, the new 3.8-liter V6 was optional there and standard on Heritage, and a 4.2-liter V8 remained optional; transmission availability depended on engine and series.

Year over year
What changed
- Ford introduced the 3.8-liter Essex V6 as a new fuel-economy option and made it standard in Heritage.
- The 5.0-liter V8 was no longer advertised; the optional V8 was the 4.2-liter engine paired with Automatic Overdrive.
- Thunderbird, Town Landau, and Heritage continued as three distinct series for the generation's final year.
Worth knowing
Notable
- The factory standard-features matrix expressly excludes the 3.3-liter six and SelectShift from Heritage and makes the 3.8-liter V6 with Automatic Overdrive standard there.
Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- Follow Ford's all-engine 7,500-mile oil interval, 30,000-mile spark-plug and air-filter intervals, and 52,500-mile or three-year coolant interval.
- Verify the 3.3 inline-six, 3.8 V6, or 4.2 V8 and SelectShift-versus-Overdrive combination before ordering powertrain or service parts.
- Inspect vinyl-roof seams, electronic instrument functions, climate controls, and power accessories on the more extensively equipped series.
