The 1980 model year
Overview
Ford moved Thunderbird to a smaller platform for 1980 and marketed Thunderbird, Town Landau, and the 25th-anniversary Silver Anniversary model. The regular cars combined a standard 4.2-liter V8 with SelectShift or an optional 5.0-liter V8 with SelectShift or Automatic Overdrive; Silver Anniversary standardized the 5.0/AOD power team. EPA data also records a late 3.3-liter six-cylinder Thunderbird.

Year over year
What changed
- An all-new, smaller eighth-generation Thunderbird replaced the 1977-1979 design.
- Town Landau returned and Silver Anniversary marked 25 years of Thunderbird.
- Automatic Overdrive debuted, and a 3.3-liter six became a late model-year economy offering.
Worth knowing
Notable
- Exterior Decor and Exterior Luxury are option groups, not additional models.
- The EPA six-cylinder row is retained as a bounded midyear Thunderbird configuration rather than being copied into Town Landau or Silver Anniversary.

Reliability & ownership notes
- Follow the brochure's 7,500-mile or 12-month oil interval and 30,000-mile chassis-lubrication interval.
- Identify engine and transmission before ordering service parts; Automatic Overdrive launch applications used the 5.0-liter V8.
- Inspect the electronic instrument cluster, keyless-entry system, climate controls, vinyl roof, and power accessories.
