The 2012 model year
Overview
The 2012 Charger expanded the redesigned LD range with three important mechanical additions: an eight-speed automatic for the Pentastar V6, V6 all-wheel drive on SXT and SXT Plus, and a returning SRT8 powered by the 470-hp 6.4-liter HEMI. Dodge's named lineup comprised SE, SXT, SXT Plus, R/T, R/T Plus, R/T Road & Track, R/T Max and SRT8; the resulting configuration pages preserve each documented transmission and drivetrain boundary.

Year over year
What changed
- An all-new eight-speed automatic became optional on SE and standard with the V6 in SXT and SXT Plus.
- AWD expanded to the V6 SXT and SXT Plus while continuing on R/T, R/T Plus and R/T Max.
- SRT8 returned with a 6.4-liter HEMI producing 470 hp and 470 lb-ft, adaptive damping and paddle shifters.
- Blacktop and Rallye appearance groups became available on SXT/SXT Plus, but are not treated as different engines.
Worth knowing
Notable
- Fourteen core powertrain/drivetrain pages result after separating SE transmissions and the five AWD-capable trim levels.
- The eight-speed raised the V6 highway estimate to a brochure-advertised 31 mpg while retaining 292 hp.
- SRT8's 6.4-liter HEMI used cylinder-deactivating Fuel Saver Technology despite its 470-hp output.
- R/T Max remained the technology flagship; SRT8 became the performance flagship.
Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- SE can have either the five- or eight-speed automatic; identify the transmission before ordering filters, fluid-service components or driveline parts.
- V6 AWD is valid beginning here, not in 2011, and adds the active transfer case, front differential, front axle disconnect and 19-inch wheel fitment.
- The 6.4-liter SRT8 has different ignition, filtration, cooling, brake, suspension and tire requirements from both the 5.7-liter R/T and V6 models.
- Road & Track and SRT8 are rear-drive-only in the cited factory lineup; do not infer AWD from the regular R/T range.
