The 2014 model year

Overview

The send-off for the S197 before the all-new, independent-rear-suspension S550 arrived for 2015. The 2014 lineup carried over: 3.7 V6 (305 hp), 5.0 GT (420 hp), and the 662 hp GT500. It was the last Mustang with a solid rear axle and the last built at Ford's Flat Rock plant under the S197 design.

Year over year

What changed

  • Final S197 model year — largely a carryover before the 2015 S550 redesign.
  • Last Mustang with a solid (live) rear axle; the 2015 car moved to independent rear suspension.
  • Commemorative/appearance packages marked the close of the generation.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • Last solid-axle Mustang — a milestone for the model line.
  • A one-off U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Edition coupe (VIN 0001) sold for charity at auction.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Mature, well-understood S197 mechanicals by this point — the Coyote 5.0 and 3.7 V6 are both proven.
  • GT500's 662 hp 5.8 still needs cooling and traction discipline.

Current market value

We don't publish a market estimate for the 2014 model year yet. A valuation ships here only when it can be sourced and dated — we'd rather show nothing than a number we can't stand behind.

    6R80 normal-service boundary

The exact 2014 special-use tables do not prescribe a shortened automatic-fluid interval. The six-speed automatic is identified as 6R80. The surrounding scheduling examples still mention a 30,000-mile automatic change without an applicable table row; that example is not published here as a service requirement. Follow the actual normal table and ask Ford to clarify that inconsistent example for special use; investigate leaks or abnormal operation.

  • Axle fluid

    V6/GT synthetic axle exception

Factory synthetic rear-axle lubricant has no routine change unless a leak is suspected, service is required or the axle is submerged. Change after submersion; for high-speed, track or competition use replace axle lubricant and friction modifier after the first hour, then every 12 hours under those conditions. The synthetic-fluid exception controls ordinary road service.
