The 2012 model year
Overview
The Boss 302 returned. A track-tuned 5.0 with upgraded internals, a high-flow intake, and a unique exhaust made 444 hp — 32 hp above the standard GT — and the road-course-focused Laguna Seca variant deleted the rear seat for an X-brace. The 3.7 V6 (305 hp), 5.0 GT (412 hp), and 550 hp GT500 carried over.

Year over year
What changed
- Boss 302 returned — 444 hp track-tuned 5.0, manual-only, with the road-course Laguna Seca variant.
- Boss 302 Laguna Seca: rear-seat delete with X-brace, Torsen differential, R-compound tires, 19-inch wheels.
- Mechanically the V6, GT, and GT500 carried over from 2011.
Worth knowing
Notable
- Boss 302 revival — one of the most celebrated modern Mustangs and a future collectible.
- Boss 302 Laguna Seca built in limited numbers (about 750 units for 2012).
Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- The Boss 302's 5.0 shares the Coyote's bottom-end strength; it runs hotter on track — owners watch oil temps during heavy use.
- MT82 shift-quality complaints persisted into early 2012 builds.

Sourced interval available
V6/GT/Boss oil-life monitor maximum
Service as indicated by the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor, which may call for earlier service; maximum one year or 10,000 miles. Reset after oil and filter replacement. Shelby does not use this monitor.

V6/GT/Boss oil-monitor fallback
If the monitor is prematurely reset or inoperative, change oil/filter within six months or 5,000 miles from the last change.

V6/GT/Boss dusty-use oil and filter
For primarily dusty/unpaved-road operation, whichever comes first. Towing and extensive idling retain message-center-directed oil service; do not substitute the Shelby 200-hour rule.

Shelby normal oil and filter
Whichever comes first. This engine does not use the V6/GT Intelligent Oil Life Monitor.

Boss 302 post-track oil and filter
Ford recommends changing oil and filter after track or competition use; this is additional to the normal oil-life-monitor schedule. Use the Boss-specific oil specification.

V6/GT/Boss every oil-service inspections
At each indicated oil service inspect tire wear/tread and wheels; rotate V6/GT tires, but Boss rotation follows its separate 5,000-mile/directional-tire rules; inspect brakes/parking brake, coolant strength/hoses, exhaust/heat shields, applicable half-shaft boots, steering/ball joints/suspension/tie rods/driveshaft/U-joints (lubricate grease fittings only). The automatic has no underhood dipstick; consult dealer for checks and investigate leaks or poor operation.

Shelby tire rotation
Standard tires: side to side only, never front to rear or crisscross. Rotation is NOT recommended for the directional optional performance-package tires (P265/40-19 front, P285/35-20 rear).

Source: Ford — 2012 Mustang Owner’s Guide, third printing, USA · p. 340 · checked
Shelby special-use tire and wheel checks
Primarily idling or dusty operation: inspect tires/wheels and rotate only where permitted by the directional-tire limitation. Extensive idling also requires brake inspection and control-arm/steering-ball-joint lubrication if grease fittings exist.

Shelby before-and-after-track service

6R80 normal-service boundary
The exact 2012 special-use tables do not prescribe a shortened automatic-fluid interval. The six-speed automatic is identified as 6R80. The surrounding scheduling examples still mention a 30,000-mile automatic change without an applicable table row; that example is not published here as a service requirement. Follow the actual normal table and ask Ford to clarify that inconsistent example for special use; investigate leaks or abnormal operation.
