Chevrolet Silverado History

A model year and the word Silverado are not enough to identify the vehicle. GM's June 2018 service publication explicitly separates 2019 legacy Silverado LD trucks from the new-model Silverado 1500. Its table also lists the legacy 2500HD/3500HD separately and introduces the 4500HD/5500HD/6500HD medium-duty family. Those are distinct service-information selections, not interchangeable trim names.

Silverado EV is a separate all-electric pickup, not a gasoline Silverado with an alternative engine selected from the same maintenance table. Chevrolet describes its 2024 EV RST as a truck developed from the ground up for electric propulsion. Keep EV documents separate from 1500 gasoline and diesel records, and distinguish the heavy-duty truck before comparing cab, bed or powertrain details.

The generation spans here describe the U.S. Silverado 1500 story, including the named transition trucks. They are not an exhaustive model-year offering matrix, a global-market catalog or evidence that an HD redesign happened in the same year. The shared cab labels describe the family over time; they do not promise every cab with every engine or trim.

Use Chevrolet's free Manuals and Guides selector with the vehicle's model year and exact model name. Start by distinguishing Silverado 1500, Silverado HD and Silverado EV. In transition years, retain the Classic or LD designation: GM publishes a specifically titled 2007 Silverado Classic manual, and its 2019 service bulletin distinguishes the old and new trucks. A registration year or a seller's shortened description should not replace that identification.

The 2024 Silverado 1500 owner's manual instructs Duramax owners to read the diesel supplement for engine-specific information. It also explains that optional equipment, model variants and country specifications can change what applies to an individual truck. Read the appropriate main manual and supplement together; a diesel supplement does not replace the rest of the vehicle manual.

Open the Service and Maintenance section for the applicable schedule, and read its operating-condition qualifications before extracting a mileage number. For towing, use that truck's trailering instructions and vehicle labels rather than a family-wide maximum from an advertisement. This page does not publish a universal oil interval, fluid capacity, towing limit or part number: those require the exact vehicle and document scope.

Chevrolet announced its next-generation 2027 Silverado 1500 on June 16, 2026, with the release updated October 2. The announcement says sales are expected at the end of 2026. That is an announced introduction, not evidence that every trim has reached customers. This history therefore keeps the future model separate from the earlier trucks' ownership documents.

The release identifies new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter gasoline V8s alongside the TurboMax and 3.0-liter Duramax offerings. That change is a practical reason to retain model-year identity when researching an engine: a familiar Silverado badge does not make a previous engine's specifications or service instructions applicable. Production availability and the manual for an individual vehicle still control.
