The 2003 model year
Overview
The 2003 Silverado refreshed the first-generation pickup’s face and cabin rather than replacing its entire cab-and-box family. Chevrolet described a revised hood, integrated grille and angular wheel openings, accompanied by a new instrument cluster and Driver Information Center. Its wider equipment offering included dual-zone climate control and revised entertainment systems. Equipment still depended on series and options: 1500, 1500HD and the heavier-duty models should not be treated as one interchangeable truck.
Specifications
- Engines
- Vortec 4300 V6
- Vortec 4800 V8
- Vortec 5300 V8 — gasoline LM7 and separately conditional flexible-fuel L59 references
- Transmissions
- Four-speed automatic overdrive — documented for LT Extended Cab; exact model and ratios are not assigned here
- Body styles
- 1500 Regular Cab, short or long box, 1500 Extended Cab, short or long box; Fleetside and conditional Sportside offerings require their own equipment checks
Year over year
What changed
- Restyled front end with a revised hood, grille, lamps and wheel openings.
- Revised instrument cluster, Driver Information Center and electrical architecture.
- Electronic throttle on small-block V8 engines; flexible-fuel 5300 availability remains distinct from gasoline LM7 identity.
- Quadrasteer availability expanded to the separate 1500HD Crew Cab family; it was not standard on every 1500.
Worth knowing
Notable
- ProTec was described for 1500 Extended Cab short-box applications excluding Quadrasteer. Two-wheel-drive traction control required the stated V8, automatic and locking-differential equipment.
- The retained order guide is headed model year 2003 but carries a March 30, 2004 publication footer. Its LT LM7 standard-equipment cell and long-box footnote remain separate from the September 2002 consumer brochure. Conflicting output figures are not reconciled by assumption.
- The configurations below cover two documented 1500 LT long-box versions; more versions remain under research. Ownership guidance covers selected scheduled services, routine checks and inspections; it is not a complete equipment-specific maintenance checklist. Cassette-player, dual-rear-wheel, manual-clutch, Allison and automatic-transfer-case instructions require verification of the fitted equipment and are not assigned here. Follow the complete original manual and its safety procedures.

Gasoline engine oil and filterView intervals, applicability and sources
Gasoline engine oil and filter
Exact reference available
Follow the GM Oil Life System and change oil and filter at least annually. When the oil-change message appears, service as soon as possible within the next two fuel stops. Reset after every change and maintain the proper oil level. If reset accidentally, change oil at 3,000 miles since the previous change.

Period oil-filter reference — verify gasoline 5300 VIN T
The 2003 owner manual identifies Vortec 5300 VIN T and lists ACDelco PF44 for that VIN. Confirm VIN T and the installed part before ordering. This period reference does not establish current supersession or stock.

Engine-air filter and optional restriction indicatorView intervals, applicability and sources
Engine-air filter and optional restriction indicator
Sourced interval available
Replace the engine-air filter at the 30,000-mile service points. The schedule also calls for dusty-condition inspection at 15,000, 45,000 and 75,000 miles, with replacement if needed. An optional indicator does not remove the scheduled replacement requirement.

Additional restriction-indicator checks, if equipped
Check at least twice a year or when the oil is changed, whichever comes first; inspect more often in dusty areas or off-road use. Replace the filter when both service windows turn orange, then reset the indicator. These checks do not substitute for the 30,000-mile schedule.

Spark-plug replacement and plug-wire inspectionView intervals, applicability and sources
Spark-plug replacement and plug-wire inspection
Exact reference available
Replace the spark plugs and inspect the plug wires. The inspection instruction does not mean automatic wire replacement. The conditional period references below require verification that the actual gasoline engine is VIN T; no current supersession or stock is established.

Period spark-plug alternatives — verify gasoline 5300 VIN T
The 2003 manual lists ACDelco 41-974 or NGK PZTR5A15 in the VIN-T spark-plug cell. These are alternative period references, not a pair to install together. Verify VIN T and the installed engine before ordering; no current replacement, stock or supersession is asserted.

Chassis lubrication
Sourced interval available
Period manual specification: NLGI #2, Category LB or GC-LB chassis lubricant
The manual lists the front suspension, ball joints, steering linkage, transmission shift linkage and parking-brake cable guides. Do not lubricate ball joints unless the joints themselves are at least 10°F (−12°C); colder joints could be damaged. This is component temperature, not an inferred ambient-temperature rule. No current grease product or ordering part number is assigned.

With every engine-oil and filter change

Use the complete original procedures and safety precautions. Starter, shift-lock, ignition/transmission-lock and parking-brake tests can cause vehicle movement; consult printed 6-13–15 or a qualified service center rather than use an abbreviated test. Repairs are required when faults are found. No manual-clutch or dual-rear-wheel duty is assigned to these records.

At least twice yearly
Inspect steering/suspension, exhaust and nearby body, fuel, cooling, throttle and brakes. Brake use may require more frequent inspections; cooling-system and pressure-cap pressure testing is recommended at least annually. Apply weatherstrip silicone grease as directed, more often in very cold, damp conditions. Do not lubricate accelerator or cruise-control cables where such cables are fitted; this does not assert that these electronic-throttle records have them. Installed-hardware warnings and repair instructions remain in the manual; no regular airbag replacement interval is assigned.

Evaporative-control inspection
At the listed 60,000-mile service point, inspect fuel/vapor lines and hoses for connection, routing and condition; check the purge valve if equipped and replace faulty components as needed. Follow the manual’s subsequent repetition instructions. This is inspection and conditional repair, not automatic replacement of an entire system.

Axle checks and tire rotation
Sourced interval available
Rotate sooner for unusual wear and inspect alignment or damaged tires/wheels as directed. Rotation patterns depend on matching tread designs and single/dual rear wheels. Do not rotate front to rear when tread designs differ. Consult the original diagrams; no universal pattern or axle-fluid product is assigned. Tire rotation is also an opportunity to inspect brakes. Front-axle duties apply only where fitted.

Four-wheel-drive front axle and transfer-case inspection
Sourced interval available
Investigate fluid loss and repair if required. Check transfer-case vent-hose installation/kinks. Lubricate a manual-shift transfer-case control-lever pivot only if that hardware is fitted; off-road use can require more frequent lubrication. Four-wheel drive does not establish automatic-transfer-case equipment or its separate fluid-change schedule. No fluid product is assigned.
