Land Rover's first monocoque, car-based compact SUV (1997–2014) — sold as the LR2 in North America for its second generation.

History
Launched in 1997, the Freelander was Land Rover's first car-derived, monocoque (unibody) compact SUV — a departure from the brand's body-on-frame tradition aimed at the booming small-4x4 market. The first generation, offered in three- and five-door forms, became one of Land Rover's best-selling models and Europe's best-selling compact 4x4 for several years.
The second generation (L359, 2006–2014) was a larger, more refined five-door, marketed as the Freelander 2 in Europe and as the LR2 in North America. Production ended in 2014; its three-door role had effectively passed to the Range Rover Evoque (2011), and the five-door was succeeded by the Discovery Sport in 2014–2015.
