History
The Discovery launched in 1989 to give Land Rover a more affordable, family-friendly model between the utilitarian Defender and the luxury Range Rover. Built initially on Range Rover Classic underpinnings, it offered genuine off-road ability with seven-seat practicality, and its introduction is the reason the original Land Rover was renamed 'Defender'.
The Series II (L318, 1998–2004) refined the formula, and the boxy, distinctive Discovery 3 (LR3 in North America, 2004–2009) and Discovery 4 (LR4, 2009–2016) moved it upmarket with an integrated body-frame structure and air suspension. The fifth-generation L462, launched in 2017, adopted a smoother monocoque design and remains in production as Land Rover's do-everything family SUV.
