Lamborghini's first new model under Audi ownership — a 6.2- then 6.5-litre V12 flagship built in 4,099 examples, culminating in the 661 hp LP 670-4 SV.

History
The Murciélago (named after a legendary fighting bull that survived 24 sword thrusts in an 1879 corrida) was introduced in 2001 as Lamborghini's first entirely new design under Audi/Volkswagen Group ownership, designed by Luc Donckerwolke. The original coupe used a 6.2-litre version of the marque's V12, producing 572 hp, and featured the scissor doors that had defined Lamborghini supercars since the Countach.
A Roadster variant arrived in 2003. The major update came in 2006 with the LP640, which stretched displacement to 6.5 litres for 632 hp. The Murciélago reached its zenith with the 2009 LP 670-4 SuperVeloce — a 661 hp, 186 limited-edition track-biased variant that was the fastest production Lamborghini to that date.
Total production reached 4,099 examples across all coupe and roadster variants before the Murciélago was replaced by the Aventador in 2011.
