Great Wall Motors Wey VV7 History
History
The Wey brand was announced in November 2016 as Great Wall's premium sub-brand — its name derived from chairman Wei Jianjun's surname — targeting Chinese buyers seeking domestic luxury at a price below German imports.
The VV7, the brand's first model, went on sale in April 2017 as a mid-size turbocharged crossover and quickly attracted strong demand, with monthly sales surpassing 10,000 units for several consecutive months by late 2017 — a strong debut by any premium-brand standard.
From 2021, Wey pivoted to a coffee-themed naming strategy (Mocha, Latte, Macchiato) for new models, while the original VV series wound down as GWM restructured Wey around PHEV-heavy new products.
