Great Wall Motors Deer History

The Great Wall Deer debuted in March 1996 as GWM's first mass-market vehicle, designed by Wei Jianjun as a compact pickup based on the sixth-generation Toyota Hilux platform and priced at roughly half the cost of comparable state-joint-venture trucks from Nissan and Isuzu.

Its combination of competitive quality and low price drove immediate export success — the Deer began shipping to the Middle East in its launch year and subsequently reached Africa and Latin America — cementing Great Wall's position as China's leading pickup-truck manufacturer and funding the company's later SUV expansion.

Production ran from March 1996 to June 2013, when it was phased out as GWM's newer Wingle pickup line took over the compact-truck role.
