History

The Haoqing rolled off the line in Linhai, Zhejiang on 8 August 1998, making it the first automobile produced by Geely and, by extension, the product that launched China's first privately-owned car manufacturer. Mechanically it drew heavily on the Daihatsu Charade, using a Daihatsu three-cylinder engine.

Mass production was delayed until 2002 because Geely did not receive its national production license until 9 November 2001. Despite those early regulatory hurdles, Geely had already ranked among China's top-ten domestic automakers by 2002, and the Haoqing remained in production until approximately 2006.
