Geely Emgrand EC7 History
History
Introduced at the 2009 Auto Shanghai show and on sale in China by August that year, the Emgrand EC7 was the flagship product of Geely's new mid-to-high-end Emgrand sub-brand. Powered by Mitsubishi-sourced 1.5- and 1.8-litre four-cylinder engines, it offered a level of refinement uncommon for a domestic Chinese car at its price point.
The EC7 became Geely's first genuine export hit, assembled in or sold to Russia, Pakistan, Uruguay, Iran, Egypt, and Taiwan (where Yulon sold it as the Tobe M'way from 2012). As of October 2015 it was China's best-selling domestically-branded sedan, a remarkable achievement for a company that only entered the car market in 1997.
Production of the EC7 under that name ran from 2009 to 2014, when Geely consolidated its Emgrand, Haoqing, and Englon sub-brands back into a unified Geely badge; the successor continued as simply the Geely Emgrand.
