Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 History
History
The Bao 5 was introduced alongside the Fang Cheng Bao brand at BYD's August 2023 launch event and went on sale in China in November 2023. It was the marque's first production vehicle and the first application of BYD's DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) Super Hybrid platform — a body-on-frame architecture combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with dual electric motors for a combined output of 505 kW (677 hp) and 760 Nm. Within three days of opening orders the brand reported 10,000 reservations.
The DMO platform integrates BYD's Blade LFP battery (31.8 kWh) directly into the chassis via Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) technology, enabling an electric-only range of 125 km (CLTC) and a combined hybrid range of 1,200 km. Three mechanical differential locks give the Bao 5 genuine off-road credentials alongside the performance numbers. Optional Cloud-P air suspension adds ride-height adjustment and a 50-inch head-up display features on upper trims.
In July 2024, Fang Cheng Bao cut the Bao 5's starting price by 50,000 yuan (approximately USD 6,900), triggering protests at dealerships from early buyers — a dynamic increasingly common in China's fast-moving EV market. Sales grew sharply: 4,888 units in 2023 (partial year), 45,989 in 2024, and 51,887 in 2025. A Long-Range Edition launched in late 2025 for export markets including Australia and New Zealand at approximately USD 37,800.
