Deepal SL03 History
History
The SL03 was revealed and went on sale in July 2022, becoming Deepal's debut product and the first model to carry the new brand's identity (then still marketed as Changan Shenlan). Positioned as a mid-size technology sedan competing with the Tesla Model 3, it launched with a low 0.230 drag coefficient, a 2,900 mm wheelbase, and a choice of three powertrain architectures rare in a single model line: pure battery electric (BEV), series-hybrid extended-range (EREV), and a limited hydrogen fuel-cell variant.
The BEV versions use battery packs ranging from roughly 60 to 80 kWh, delivering CLTC ranges up to 705 km. The EREV pairs a small battery (around 19 kWh) with a range-extending engine for a combined CLTC range of 1,200–1,500 km. The hydrogen variant, developed partly with Shell, added a fuel-cell stack for zero-emission long-range use — a technology showcase that put Deepal ahead of most peers at launch.
In 2023 the SL03 sold 68,069 units in China, making it Deepal's volume anchor in its first full year. A September 2024 update introduced the sister model L07 (see below), which added Huawei's smart-driving suite and refreshed interior tech, while the SL03 continued alongside it with a more sporting character.
