Cupra Ateca History

The Cupra Ateca was the very first car to wear the standalone Cupra badge, introduced in October 2018 just months after Volkswagen Group formally separated Cupra from SEAT as its own marque. It was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 296–300 hp (figures varied across markets and model years) paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and 4Drive all-wheel drive, reaching 62 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Built on Volkswagen Group's MQB A-1 platform — shared with the SEAT Ateca and the Volkswagen Tiguan — the Cupra Ateca positioned itself not as a traditional performance SUV but as an alternative to the hot hatch, with stiffened suspension and wider tyres lowering its centre of gravity. It remained in production until the launch of its successor, the Terramar, in late 2024.
