History

The Cupra Born was introduced in February 2021 and went into full production in September 2021 at Volkswagen's Zwickau plant in Germany. It was originally unveiled as the SEAT el-Born concept in 2019, but by launch it had become Cupra's own model as SEAT stepped back from the EV segment. The Born shares the VW Group MEB platform with the Volkswagen ID.3.

Named after the El Born cultural quarter of Barcelona, the Born offered multiple battery configurations at launch. Cupra positioned it as the performance-oriented companion to the ID.3 — with sportier styling, lowered suspension, and a more driver-focused interior. It serves as Cupra's gateway into the electric vehicle market ahead of the brand's broader electrification push.
