Bufori MK I History

The MK I Roadster (1988–1992) evolved the Madison concept by adding proper hinged side doors, making the car genuinely practical as a two-seater. The Volkswagen air-cooled flat-four carried over in displacements ranging from 1.6 to 2.1 litres, rear-mounted and driving the rear wheels, with twin carburettors on higher-output versions.

Suspension was four-wheel independent throughout, and the car was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. It remained a hand-built cottage product, assembled in the Khouri brothers' Sydney workshop. The MK I established the visual grammar — long bonnet, cycle wings, a tiny cabin — that all subsequent Buforis would follow.
