Bufori Madison History

The Madison was the car that started Bufori. In 1986, Gerry Khouri hand-built a two-seat roadster in his Merrylands, Sydney garage, inspired by the long-bonnet 1920s–30s Packard and Duesenberg look. His brothers Anthony and George were so taken with the result that they each wanted one, and the Bufori Motor Car Company was born.

Built on a custom tubular-steel chassis, the Madison used a 1.6-litre Volkswagen air-cooled flat-four driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. The body was hand-formed using early composite techniques. With no side doors — occupants stepped straight over the sill — it was more garage sculpture than road car, but it proved the concept that the brothers would spend the next four decades refining. Production of the Madison ran through 1988, after which it was succeeded by the improved MK I.
