Ashok Leyland Viking History

The Viking arrived in 1976 as the first Indian bus to incorporate an alternator, replacing the generator-based electrical system that had been standard on earlier vehicles. Its distinctive front overhang — a design feature borrowed from the English Albion Viking — enabled front-door entry, improving passenger flow in congested urban environments.

The Viking was developed following the end of Ashok Leyland's technical collaboration with British Leyland in 1975, making it among the first major bus platforms the company engineered with greater indigenous input. It entered service with state transport corporations across India and became one of the most recognisable bus silhouettes on the subcontinent.
