Ashok Leyland Cheetah History

Introduced in 1978, the Cheetah was India's first rear-engined bus — a configuration already common in Europe but new to Indian bus manufacturing. By relocating the engine to the rear, Ashok Leyland eliminated the heat and noise that front-engined buses directed at the driver, improving working conditions and passenger comfort in the forward cabin.

The rear-engine layout did introduce an unexpected challenge: drivers reported being unable to hear the engine, which had previously served as an informal diagnostic cue. Despite this quirk the Cheetah was adopted by state transport operators and marked another step in Ashok Leyland's growing ability to engineer full bus platforms from the ground up.
