Ashok Leyland Tusker History

Ashok Leyland unveiled the Tusker in 1980 alongside the opening of its second plant at Hosur, Tamil Nadu. It was India's first domestically developed 13-tonne truck and came powered by a 125 hp engine — a significant leap in both payload and power for Indian fleet operators who had previously relied on lighter, imported-derived trucks.

The Tusker represented Ashok Leyland's maturation from a licenced assembler into an independent engineering company, arriving in the same year the company launched the Taurus multi-axle truck. Together the two nameplates signalled a new era of heavy-duty indigenously engineered Indian commercial vehicles.
