Ashok Leyland Taurus History

Launched in 1980 alongside the Tusker, the Taurus became India's first multi-axle truck and defined the heavy-tipper category for a generation. Its ability to handle extreme payloads on challenging Indian roads made it the go-to vehicle for mining, construction, and infrastructure projects across the country.

The nameplate's cultural impact ran so deep that Indian fleet operators came to use 'Taurus' as a generic term for any multi-axle tipper — the same way 'Xerox' or 'Hoover' became generic product names in other markets. The original Taurus dominated highway and mining haulage from the 1980s through the early 2000s before fading from the range. Ashok Leyland revived the Taurus and the companion Hippo heavy-duty trucks in January 2026 — now built on the AVTR modular platform — citing the enduring brand recognition of the original name.
