History

The Tonale entered production in February 2022, making it the first hybrid-powered Alfa Romeo and the brand's first new model in six years. Based on a modified version of the SCCS platform shared with the Jeep Compass, it was delayed from a planned 2021 launch by the global semiconductor shortage and management demands for improved range and performance.

Powertrain options include a 48-volt mild-hybrid 1.5-litre turbo and a 1.3-litre plug-in hybrid offering approximately 30 miles of electric-only range. The Tonale arrived in the US for the 2023 model year with the 2.0-litre petrol engine; the PHEV followed. It is part of Alfa Romeo's stated plan to transition to a fully electric line-up by 2027 under Stellantis.
