History

The 164 was developed as part of the 'Type Four' collaborative project — sharing its platform with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema, and SAAB 9000 — yet the Pininfarina body gave it a distinctive Italian character. In European markets it was available from 1987 with a range of four- and six-cylinder engines.

In the United States, only the 3.0-litre V6 was offered, in 12-valve form (1991–1993, 183 hp) and then a 24-valve version (1994–1995, up to 230 hp in S trim). The 164 was Alfa Romeo's final US-market car before the brand's 1995 withdrawal; total US sales across its run were modest, below 10,000 units. Production continued in Europe through 1998.
