Alfa Romeo GTV / Spider (916 series) History

Designed by Enrico Fumia at Pininfarina, the 916-series GTV and Spider debuted at the 1994 Paris Motor Show and went on sale in 1995. Despite the sporting shape, both were front-wheel-drive cars on the Fiat Tipo-Due platform — a choice that attracted criticism but kept prices accessible. The GTV was a 2+2 coupé; the Spider a two-seat open roadster.

Three production phases followed (Phase 1: 1994–1998; Phase 2: 1998–2003; Phase 3: 2003–2004). Engine options ranged from a 1.8 Twin Spark four to a 3.0-litre V6 and, in the GTV only, a rare 2.0-litre turbocharged V6. A total of approximately 42,937 GTVs and 38,891 Spiders were built before production ended in 2004.
