Zagato Zagato Maserati Mostro History

The Zagato Maserati Mostro was revealed at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance in 2015, created to celebrate Maserati's 100th anniversary. The name 'Mostro' (monster) was originally bestowed by Stirling Moss on the extraordinary 1957 Maserati 450S Coupé, for which Zagato had designed the body in collaboration with aerodynamicist Frank Costin. The 2015 car was a spiritual recreation: Norihiko Harada, Zagato's chief designer, used carbon fibre and contemporary construction techniques to reinterpret the original's enclosed racing silhouette. Beneath lay the 4.2-litre V8 and transmission from the Maserati GranTurismo. Only five examples were produced.

At the 2022 Villa d'Este concours, Zagato announced five further Mostros in open barchetta form, all pre-sold. The Mostro project illustrates Zagato's continued approach of pairing historical Milanese craftsmanship with contemporary mechanicals for ultra-exclusive clientele.
