Zagato Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato History

Unveiled at the London Motor Show in late 1960, the DB4 GT Zagato was a collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato aimed squarely at international GT racing. Zagato replaced the DB4 GT's steel body with a lighter, more aerodynamically refined aluminium shell featuring the studio's signature double-bubble roofline. The factory initially planned 25 cars, but actual demand produced only 19 — far fewer than anticipated.

The cars competed at Le Mans and in British and European GT racing during the early 1960s, though outright victories against the Ferrari 250 GTO proved elusive. Their rarity and aesthetic purity drove values to extraordinary heights in the collector market; examples have sold at auction for well over £10 million. In 2019 Aston Martin and Zagato released the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation — 19 newly hand-built period-correct recreations — as half of the DBZ Centenary Collection marking Zagato's 100th anniversary.
