Zagato Alfa Romeo SZ / RZ History

The Alfa Romeo SZ (Sprint Zagato) was unveiled in 1989 and assembled at Zagato's Milan atelier on behalf of Alfa Romeo. Its styling — penned jointly by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo and Zagato — was aggressively boxy, earning the affectionate nickname 'Il Mostro' (The Monster) from enthusiasts. The mid-front-engine coupe used the 3.0-litre Busso V6 producing 210 bhp, mounted in the same platform as the contemporary 75.

Production of the coupe ran from 1989 to 1991 and yielded 1,036 cars — slightly over the planned 1,000. A convertible version, the RZ (Roadster Zagato), followed from 1992 to December 1994 with 278 examples built against a planned 350. Both cars are recognised as among the last of the hand-assembled Alfa-Zagato collaborations before Fiat group consolidated production.
