Yugo GVX History

Introduced to the US market for the 1987 model year, the GVX was Yugo America's attempt to offer a genuinely sporty entry-level car alongside the basic GV. It paired the 1,301cc overhead-cam engine with a five-speed manual gearbox — upgrades over the GV's 1,100cc / four-speed combination — and added a ground-effects package, alloy wheels, and rally-style driving lights as standard equipment.

The GVX was never a high-volume seller, but it gave the Yugo line a performance story at a time when many buyers were gravitating toward the similarly priced domestic and Japanese alternatives. Its US sales ended in 1992 when Yugo America ceased operations amid the Yugoslav Wars and emissions-compliance issues.
