Yugo Florida History

The Florida was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign and introduced by Zastava on February 19, 1987, with first production cars leaving the Kragujevac factory on October 2, 1988. It represented Zastava's most significant engineering step: a clean-sheet five-door hatchback with modern styling (sharing visual DNA with the Fiat Uno and SEAT Ibiza of the same era) and engines ranging from 1.1 to 1.6 liters, including a Peugeot-sourced diesel.

Marketed in the United Kingdom as the 'Yugo Sana' from 1988 to 1992, the Florida offered 1,400cc petrol and 1,700cc diesel options in that market. Zastava had ambitious export plans — targeting 60,000–100,000 units per year with 70% earmarked for export — but the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s devastated those projections. The car survived domestically in Serbia through the postwar years, with Egyptian manufacturer Nasr producing a licensed 'Nasr Florida 1400' from 2001.

The Florida was Zastava's most expensive model until the Zastava 10 concept was shown at the 2006 Belgrade Motor Show. Production of both the Florida and the Koral finally ended in November 2008, closing the book on Zastava's passenger-car era. Total Florida production reached approximately 29,950 units.
