The first 30-98 was built in 1913 at Vauxhall's Luton works at the request of dealer and competitor Joseph Higginson, who promptly won the Shelsley Walsh hill-climb in it on 7 June 1913, setting a course record. It used the Prince Henry chassis, distinguished by a flatter radiator.
Pomeroy developed it from the Prince Henry's L-head side-valve four, bored and stroked for more capacity. Built from 1913 to 1927 (interrupted by the First World War), the 30-98 became one of the most celebrated British sports cars of the Vintage era, the later overhead-valve OE model capable of around 100 mph.
