Valmet Automotive Porsche Boxster & Cayman (1997–2012) History

When demand for the newly launched Porsche Boxster (986) exceeded the capacity of Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory, Porsche turned to Valmet Automotive. Production of the Boxster at Uusikaupunki began in the autumn of 1997. The Finnish plant was chosen for its proven quality record and its port location, which simplified logistics for European exports.

In 2005 the Porsche Cayman coupe joined the Boxster on the Valmet line as the 987 generation arrived, giving the Finnish plant both body variants of Porsche's entry-level sports car. By 2007 alone, approximately 180,000 Boxsters had been built in Uusikaupunki. Over the full 15-year run (1997–2012), Valmet assembled more than 227,000 Boxsters and Caymans combined.

Production of both models in Finland ended in 2012 when Porsche redistributed output between its Zuffenhausen and Osnabrück plants. The Porsche contract fundamentally reshaped Valmet's identity: it demonstrated that a Finnish contract manufacturer could deliver German premium-brand quality at scale and attracted the wave of OEM partnerships that followed.
