Valmet Automotive Fisker Karma (2011–2012) History

Fisker Automotive and Valmet Automotive signed a final assembly agreement in November 2008 for the Karma, an extended-range electric luxury sports sedan designed by Henrik Fisker. Production began at Uusikaupunki in July 2011. The Karma was assembled largely by hand, starting at five units per week and scaling to 25 units per day by December 2011.

About 2,000 Karmas reached customers in North America and Europe through December 2012 — roughly 200 deliveries in 2011 and approximately 1,800 in 2012. Production was suspended in November 2012 when A123 Systems, the sole battery supplier, filed for bankruptcy following two separate battery recalls. Total Valmet production of the Karma reached approximately 2,450 units before the contract ended.

Despite its brief and troubled run, the Karma remains notable as one of the first luxury plug-in hybrids assembled in Europe, and the Fisker programme demonstrated Valmet's ability to manage complex, low-volume, high-specification EV assembly.
