History

The GS5 launched in March 2012 (development began 2011) as the first SUV from Trumpchi, built on the same Alfa Romeo 166 / Lancia Kappa platform that underpinned the GA5 sedan. It gave GAC's own brand its first foot in China's fast-expanding SUV market at a time when the segment was growing explosively.

A second generation GS5 arrived later in the model's life, before the nameplate was retired in 2021 — some variants were subsequently relabeled as the GS4 Plus. The GS5 demonstrated that the Alfa-derived platform, while showing its age, could be stretched into credible crossover packaging.
