History

The GA5 was the car that put Trumpchi on the map. GAC acquired the Alfa Romeo 166 / Lancia Kappa platform and tooling from Fiat Group in 2009, giving it a proven European foundation for its first own-brand vehicle. Mass production started in September 2010, and the inaugural batch of 500 cars was delivered to the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games organizing committee — a high-profile debut that planted the Trumpchi name in the public consciousness.

Public sales launched at Auto Guangzhou in December 2010, with the car marketed as an upscale, quality-forward alternative to lower-cost Chinese brands. A plug-in hybrid variant arrived in 2014, showing GAC's ambition to move up the technology ladder. Production ran through 2018, when the smaller GA4 compact took over as the brand's mainstream sedan.
