Tata Motors Sumo History
History
The Tata Sumo debuted in 1994 as a boxy, rear-wheel-drive SUV designed for Indian conditions — roomy enough for ten occupants and tough enough for both military use and rural roads. More than 100,000 were sold before 1997 alone.
Over a quarter century in production the Sumo received multiple revisions — including the Sumo Gold and Sumo Grande variants — and remained a fixture of Indian rural and semi-urban transport before production ended in 2019.

Sumo Grande
A longer, more upmarket variant of the Sumo (launched January 2008) with increased cabin space and more modern features; the Grande name was retired in the 2014 facelift, when the vehicle was rebadged as the Sumo Movus (built until 2016).
