Tata Motors Sierra History

Launched in 1991, the Tata Sierra was India's first fully homegrown sports utility vehicle — styled in-house and built on the Tata Telcoline platform with a rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame chassis.

The Sierra was notable for offering features then rare in India: electric power windows, air conditioning, an adjustable steering wheel, and a tachometer. Offered with a diesel engine and five-speed gearbox, it carved out a following among Indian buyers seeking rugged utility with some comfort.

Production ran from 1991 to 2003. Tata revived the Sierra name as a modern EV concept (shown 2020), though the original three-door remains the car that started Tata's passenger-vehicle story.
