Stutz introduced the Black Hawk as a separate, lower-priced companion marque for 1929 to broaden its range below the senior Stutz models — sold as a sporting speedster with related body styles, with roughly 1,310 built in 1929. It lasted only into 1930 (about 280 cars) as the Depression collapsed demand.
The Black Hawk name separately attached to Stutz's supercharged competition machines — most famously Frank Lockhart's twin-engined Stutz Black Hawk Special land-speed streamliner of 1927–1928. Sources sometimes conflate the two, but the road-going companion marque (1929–1930) and the record cars (circa 1927–1928) were distinct uses of the name.
