Škoda Octavia History
History
The Octavia name first appeared in January 1959 as a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive saloon built in Mladá Boleslav, with more than 360,000 units produced before the line was discontinued in 1971.
The modern Octavia was revived in November 1996 on Volkswagen Group underpinnings, launching the front-wheel-drive hatchback-liftback that would define the brand for the VW era. Built on the PQ34 platform and sharing architecture with the VW Golf IV, the first modern generation sold until 2010, with estate (Combi) and all-wheel-drive variants added in 1998 and 1999 respectively. The hot vRS performance model joined in 2001.
Three further generations followed — the 1Z (2004–2013), the 5E (2012–2019), and the current NX (2020–present) — each growing in size, technology, and powertrain electrification. The fourth-generation Octavia, revealed in November 2019, added plug-in hybrid (iV) variants alongside petrol, diesel, and CNG options. More than six million modern-era Octavias had been sold by the mid-2020s, making it one of the best-selling cars in Europe.
