Škoda Fabia History
History
The Fabia made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999, built on the Volkswagen Group A04 platform and succeeding the Felicia as Škoda's entry-level model. Available from launch as a hatchback, estate (Combi), and saloon, it offered Volkswagen Group mechanicals at a value price and quickly won market share across Europe.
Three more generations followed the first (6Y, 1999–2008): the 5J (2007–2014), the NJ (2014–2022), and the PJ (2021–present). The third generation was lauded as 'Overall winner' and 'Best small car' at the 2015 What Car? awards. The fourth-generation Fabia, built on the MQB A0 platform shared with the VW Polo and SEAT Ibiza, launched in 2021 as a hatchback only, dropping the estate body.
Performance variants included the diesel-only first-generation RS and a reintroduced vRS for the second generation; the fourth generation gained a Fabia 130 high-output variant. Nearly five million Fabias had been sold across all generations by the mid-2020s.
