History

Amazon led a $700 million investment in Rivian in early 2019 and, that September, ordered 100,000 custom electric delivery vans — at the time one of the largest commercial EV orders ever placed. The resulting Electric Delivery Van (EDV) was co-developed with Amazon on a commercial derivative of Rivian's R1 skateboard platform and built at the Normal, Illinois plant.

The first EDV reached Amazon in December 2021, with broad rollout across U.S. cities beginning in 2022. The van was offered in multiple sizes (marketed by cargo volume, e.g. the EDV 500 and EDV 700) and featured pedestrian-friendly styling with round headlights and a high, panoramic driving position.

In November 2023 Rivian opened sales of the van to other fleet customers as the Rivian Commercial Van, ending Amazon's earlier exclusivity. It remains Rivian's commercial-vehicle line and a meaningful share of the company's output.
